As to the writing of fanfics; as others have said, writing is writing. I feel it's both harder and easier to write a fanfic because you're dealing with things that are already established. To be able to write accurately, you have to do your research, and it sets you up so that if you eventually go to original fiction, you already know how to look into things. At the same time, because they're already established, you're not starting from scratch and your imagination has a safe place to bloom.
